Belisarius Cawl is an intimidating looking model. There are a lot of tiny, fragile bits to assemble and a whole lot of surface area to paint. The model was fairly easy to assemble and a joy to paint. Of course I made it difficult on myself and glued the whole model together. It was a bit of a challenge to paint some bits but I got it done. If you haven’t started on Cawl yet I recommend keeping the upper and lower portions separate.
Cawl is the last model of the Triumvirate of the Imperium to complete for Inner Circle. I saved the hardest for last. I primed the model black and then sprayed Leadbelcher. I washed the model with Nuln Oil and drybrushed Necron Compound.
I painted XV-88 on the robes and washed it with Agrax Earthshade. Cawl doesn’t have much flesh left. I only had to paint his face and left hand with Celestra Grey.
Now I have all the base colours and washes down.
I know that Cawl is a special character and is supposed to have a red cloak. I wanted him to match the rest of my army so I deviated from the studio colours of the Mars pattern.
It’s a good idea to paint the face first and then glue the mask on. It was a wee bit difficult paint past the mask.
Colours used:
- Flesh- Celestra Grey, Gulliman Blue, Ulthuan Grey, Pallid Wych Flesh (highlight)
- Robe- HV-88, Agrax Earthshade, Abverland Sunset, Ungor Flesh (highlight), Dorn Yellow (highlight)
- Black Armour- black, Kabalite Green (highlight), Sybarite Green (highlight), Gauss Blaster Green (highlight)
- Gold- Retributor Armour, Burnished Gold, Agrax Earthshade, Mithril Silver (highlight)
- Blue power cells- Regal Blue, Gulliman Blue, Enchanted Blue, Hoeth Blue, Lothern Blue, Baharroth Blue
- Red- Khorne Red, Nuln oil, Khorne Red, Agrax Earthshade, Red Gore (highlight), Blood Red (highlight)
- Cables- Xereus Purple, Druchii Violet, Xereus Purple, Genestealer Purple (highlight)
Now the highlights are starting to appear. I’m pleased with how the globe in the spider turned out.
I’ve discovered working with the yellows and greens that thinner highlights are better. I was really thick on some of the earlier models so I am going to go back and thin out the highlights. I’d say painting the Eletro-Priests and Cawl is around the time that I felt like things were coming together with this army. I am really pleased with how they are turning out.
The next photos are Cawl completed with the exception of his book and the base.
I’m really happy with how this turned out. Stay tuned for more Inner Circle posts this week. The big day is this Saturday.
Thanks for reading.
WOw man. You’re on fire lately. I was just looking at this model last night. I’m tempted to get it. Even to just Butcher it for all those lovely parts. Well done on the paint man. It looks amazing. One of your best.

Thanks. I’m glad I “practiced” on a few Mechanicus models first. Once I got an idea of highlights things seemed to come together. It’s a gorgeous model. You won’t be disappointed working with this bad boy.

That is a lovely looking model, very well done man. Really has good enough painting to match the sculpt. You are doing great with inner circle.

The model is great. It’s awesome to see how much the technology has improved over the last few years. I’ll be losing some sleep this week to make sure everything gets done. Looking forward to a breather after this. I’ll be rewarded with Alien Covenant next week!
