Sylvaneth- Darkroot Wargrove

November and December were a blur for me so I didn’t get much gaming in.  I march on over to GW West Edmonton with plans to purchase the Sylvaneth Darkroot Wargrove battleforce.  They didn’t have it and I found out it was a limited run.  D’oh!  Nuts to being extremely busy.  I was not going down without a fight.  I did some hunting and Thunderground Comics in St. Albert had one box left.

GW West Edmonton has started a Path to Glory campaign from the General’s Handbook.  I started to assemble the models as soon as I got home.  The only model I left on sprue is the Treelord Ancient.  I want to get the other models painted first before tackling another Ancient.

The Sylvaneth models look great.  They are a pain to clean though.  Thankfully the technology has improved tremendously and the mold lines were not too bad.  There are a lot of thin parts so I snapped some branches off when attempting to clean mold lines.

The archer Kurnoth Hunters are popular for obvious reasons.  They are the only valid long-range unit for the army and can do a lot of damage at a distance.  I wanted some close combat Kurnoth Hunters as well.  The models have some dynamic poses that suit the close combat weapons.  I chose the swords over the scythes for the consistency in damage.  The scythes deal D3 damage while the swords deliver 2 damage.  I roll a lot of ones so rolling the dice for a potential 3 damage was not worth it for me.

I dropped the right archer and it popped off the base.  I glued the leg back to the foot and it had a bit of a lean.  Hopefully that will not be a problem in the future.

I will be painting Drycha with a brown bark.  The brown will go well with the yellow honeycomb.

This is one of my top priority projects of the year.  The kickstarter terrain from Death Ray Designs has arrived and I have started to assemble it.  I’ll be splitting my attention to the terrain and these models.  It’s below zero weather in Alberta so I will have to wait a while to prime these models.  I’m looking forward to painting all of these.  Be prepared for lots of updates in the upcoming months.

My Path of Glory army, Guardians of the Grove, consists of:

  • Treelord Ancient (Groot)- General
  • Treelord (Baby Groot)
  • 5 Tree Revenants (Flax)
  • 3 Kurnoth Hunters with bows (Quill)
  • 3 Kurnoth Hunters with swords (Bora the Explora)

I played one game already and had lots of fun throwing some dice down with Nik.  For my bonus I added another unit, Bobbi the Branchwraith.  You may remember Bobbi as my general from the Wargasm event in November.  I wanted to use the new models for the campaign.  I forgot to bring a camera so no battle report for that game.

Thanks for reading.

  1. Those big dudes with swords look really cool. Fantastic poses.

    • That’s the standard pose. I assure you, it’s not my skills. Of course, they can be easily modified. Assembly is the stage I dislike the most. I stick to the instructions.

      • Awesome pose nonetheless.

The new GW models often have great dynamic poses but can be very hard to convert in return.

    • Thanks. These models will be a nice change from the Dryads.

  4. Great work on getting all of those together. I was sourly tempted to pick up that box myself but am trying hard not to buy models until I can finish some of my back log.
Looking forward to them painted and part of your grove.

  5. It was too good of a deal to pass up. Plus, I finished all my previous Sylvaneth so I gave myself permission to buy these. Iknow what you mean though about not buying models to catch up with all the other projects.
