Onslaught- Age of Sigmar Armies on Parade

One day of game wasn’t enough for me so I bought the Onslaught weekend pass and participated in the Age of Sigmar event.  Onslaught is a local Edmonton event that has been going on for over ten years now.  This is my first Age of Sigmar event.  Similar to 40K I was curious to see how my army would fare in painted category.  A nice bonus is meeting some new players and checking out other cool armies.

AoS 011

The Skaven above was my first match versus Dean.  I was a mess this game.  It was a super busy week at work.  It was one of the more exhausting work weeks I’d experienced and thankful it was over.  Then then next day was the 40K Onslaught event.  Then I get home and have to finish painting 10 Dryads and a Branchwych.  I hate the late night painting sessions but I had no choice.

I was sorely tempted to call Ward and let him know I would be a no-show.  I dragged myself out of bed and arrived when the first round was about to begin.  This game was almost like an out-of-body experience.  I was making one dumb decision after another.  I was watching a bad movie unfold in front of me.  Pair that up with my first experience playing against Skaven and I was rolled over with ease.  I gave myself a goal of trying to kill all the Clan Rats I was able to achieve that objective at least.  Dean’s army was impressive.  He unleashed a lot of mortal wounds on me and kept pressing.  My quick demise allowed for more time to relax for the next game.

AoS 012

Ryan was my next match-up.  You can see above he had a lot of models and a giant Squig.  I’ve gone up against a Squig before and they can be scary.  I had an ace up the sleeve though- Drycha.

Drycha can choose one of two shooting attacks.  One is roll 10 dice for each squad within a set distance based on her wounds and for each 6+ rolled that squad receives a mortal wound.  The second attack is pick a squad and roll a dice for each model within 10 inches.  If Drycha is full health the unit is dealt a mortal wound on every 3+ that is rolled.  Drycha can potentially re-roll 1’s on this attack as well.  I always go with the second attack.  It is a huge horde killer and Drycha cleared a lot of space on the board for me.

Hat tip to Ryan.  The game leaned towards my favour early on but he kept a smile on his face the whole time.  Table top gaming needs more players like Ryan.  He doesn’t win too many games but he loves his Orcs.  Loyal to the end regardless of the power level.

AoS 013

James was my final opponent for the day.  He was playing Chaos with Nurgle.  We both talked about our bad dice luck.  James told me that he typically changes his opponents dice luck.  I was skeptical at first but became a believer after this game.  James had terrible dice luck and my fortunes changed for the better.

James also had some bad luck with the mission.  There were two objectives and only heroes and behemoths could claim them.  I had two heroes and three behemoths.  James only had two heroes.  All I had to do was eliminate these heroes and the game was mine.  The Dryads were my MVP this game.  Having two 20 strong units and being able to re-roll saves of 1 kept these Forest Folk in the fight to whittle down the Warriors.  It was unfortunate that we drew the mission we did.

Here are other armies from the day.  I missed a couple due to the players being in the middle of a game.  I didn’t want to get in the way.

I plan on starting a Death Nighthaunt army with Morghasts and Nagash.  The aesthetics are unlike anything else I have painted, which is the large draw for this army.

I’m a big fan of the Mawcrusha model.  Not so much the Orc riding it, but love the big gorilla dragon.

AoS 010

Kharadron Overlords!  I haven’t seen these models in person yet.  I was super excited to see this army.  I love the look of this army.

Next up is Paul’s Fyreslayers.  Paul posted a couple of pictures on Facebook a few days before the event.  I knew he was going to be my biggest competition for best presentation.  He did a fantastic job on this army.  Not only that he took home best general.  For some reason unbeknownst to me I only took close-ups of his Magmadroths.  Paul painted a lot of models for this event and to a high standard.

AoS 001

AoS 002

Paul scored highest on presentation but since he won best general the best presentation went to the runner-up.  Lucky for me I was in that position and took the trophy home.  Thanks for sharing Paul!  I don’t know what I was thinking but I didn’t take any photos of my army while it was set-up.  I set it up at home but I don’t think the quality is as good compared to the hotel lighting.  It was a good day.  Everyone seemed relaxed and enjoying themselves.  My opponents were all fantastic so hat tip to the three of you.

The pictures above are my 2000 point roster.  It’s not the complete family photo though.  I’ve added Durthu and my second Branchwraith into the fold now.

Now for the full family photo.  I’ve added all the unpainted models I have to work on: 6 Kurnoth Hunters, 5 Tree Revenants, 5 Spite Revenants, 1 Treelord, 1 Treelord Ancient and Alarielle.  I may add more Dryads and a second Branchwych in the future.  It took me a while Rory but here’s the family photo.

The close up of the inspiration of starting a Sylvaneth army.  I am super stoked to paint this model.

Thanks for reading.

  3. Congratulations for doing so well on Army presentation – I can tell you it’s clearly well deserved. The event looks like it was a lot of fun as well, and with some amazing looking forces there!

    • It was a good day. The Age of Sigmar crowd is a relaxed bunch. I don’t think I’ve played a game yet where I wanted to get the game over with because the other player was being a nob.

      • It’s funny. While I’m not fan of them blowing up The Old World or the “no-points” thing they implemented at first, the majority of AoS players seem to be happy enough to just get on with painting, modelling and playing the game.
Conversely, so many of the people who don’t actually play it seem intent in endlessly bitching about it even now when they could just get over it and keep playing 8th, or 9th Age, or KoW or all of the above…
