Inner Circle Update

It’s time for another Inner Circle update.  This is a way for me to keep track of my progress and decide what projects to drop and add.

Saint WIP 10

In case you are unfamiliar with Inner Circle it is a painting event being hosted by Games Workshop North America.  Participants are encouraged to purchase, build and paint 40K models from February 11 to May 13.  No purchase is necessary and previously painted models can be entered.  Models painted after February 11 receive extra points.  Each participant can enter up to 18 characters and/or units.

Five finalists will be chosen from the winners of every Games Workshop North America store.  Those five finalists will be flown out to Dallas for some sneak peaks.  I’m thinking they’ll have a chance to play some 8th edition before it’s released.

There’s extra points for having a theme and I chose to do the Battle of Elysion Fields from Gathering Storm: Fall of Cadia.  The scene is when the armies of the Imperium are in the cavern and Belisarius Cawl is inspecting the Cadian Pylon.  Trazyn has just released his Imperium collection to aid in the fight against Chaos.

This scene gave me a good reason to paint the Triumvirate of the Imperium.  Another bonus is the diversity in the models.  If I was painting just Space Marines I think I’d have gone crazy by now.

Painted and have to be based:

  1. Saint Celestine with Eleanor and Guinevere
  2. Canoness Veridyan
  3. Priest
  4. Inquisitor Greyfax
  5. Storm Troopers x3
  6. Storm Troopers x3
  7. Jokaero
  8. Belisarius Cawl
  9. Kataphron Destroyers x3
  10. Infiltrators x5
  11. Ruststalkers x5
  12. Fulgurite Electro-Priests x5
  13. Corpuscarii Electro Priests x5
  14. Astropath
  15. Trazyn the Infinite

Will is giving me a hand with the bases.  The GW crackle paint (Martian Ironearth and Ironcrust) has a possibility of chipping off the base.  Will suggested putting sand down to give it more surface area to attach to.  Some thin cork was also applied to change up the texture on the base.

Will enjoys working on bases so his advice and assistance has been invaluable.  I’m really glad I’ve gone with red.  It’s a stark contrast to the yellow Mechanicus models.

Hmm, there’s some models that haven’t had any WIP posts in the next picture.

Projects currently working on:

  1. Vostroyan Platoon Command x5
  2. Adepta Sororitas Retributors x10

I have one spot left to complete my army.  I can also remove some of the above models.  I painted the Priest, Astropath and Jokaero as insurance.  They didn’t take too long so I quickly painted them up to ensure I get 18 characters and/or units done.  Thanks to Codex: Imperial Agents, Storm Troopers can now come in units of three.  I can combine the two units into one unit of six.  Yes, it seems kind of cheesy to do single models but it is an option that is available and the board is going to get crowded fast.  Plus, it fits the theme with heroes being released.

I plan on going past eighteen selections and the best combination of models will make the final display.  Here’s the list of possible additions with at least one making the final cut:

  1. Kastelen Robots with phosphor blasters x2
  2. Kastelen Robots with power fists x2
  3. Kataphron Breachers x3
  4. Space Marine Chaplain
  5. Techpriest Enginseer
  6. Inquisition Acolytes x3
  7. Commissar

I’ve been concerned for a bit that I wasn’t going to be able to paint enough to get up to eighteen unit selections.  While it is not mandatory to have eighteen, it does improve once’s chance of winning.  Painting models after February 11 also helps.  Now that I have written out the list I feel good.  I’ve been consumed with painting over the last few weeks so it’s good to see the work paying off.  There’s a lot of diversity and bright colours. I am gunning for a trip to Dallas so I hope it’s enough.

The display board is coming along as well.  I went to a friend’s a few days ago to get started.  He has the experience and tools to make a table.  There was a stroke of good luck too.  Joe at Broken Paintbrush tweeted a tutorial on how to build a display board before I headed over to my buddies.  That tutorial has been a godsend so thank you Joe.

Stay tuned for more WIP posts.  Thanks for reading.

    • May 13 will be interesting. Gunning for the store winner and fingers crossed it’s a top five entry for North America. Dream big right?

  2. There is no way I could get all that done in that time. Well played chief, keep at it. I am looking forward to seeing everything together.

    • I’ll be taking a break from painting after this. The advantage of shift work is there is a lot of time to myself between night sets. Props to my wife as well for allowing me to get all this painting done.

  3. Wow you have been busy! A great achievement to get all that down in such a short space of time dude.

Really like the red bases too. You are right, they offset and contrast the yellows very nicely

    • Lots of characters and small units make a big difference. Shift work helps. When I am on my night sets I get a lot of work done in between sets. I took a couple of shifts off also to get work done. The weather in Edmonton has also been lousy so it’s been easy to stay in and paint. Needless to say I will be taking some time off of painting soon. Just in time to play some 8th edition.

  4. Great progress Turkadactyl, loving the sand addition to the red Martian bases, great advice. That’s a sweet looking Mechanicus force growing there. And the Saint needs pupils? Or going for the opiate overdose bliss look? In which case, nailed it 😉

    • I followed the studio version and abstained from painting pupils. I tried to get a blue glow as well but that failed miserably.
