Cult Mechanicus- Kastelen Robot WIP Pt.2

I have to say the Kastelen Robot has been one of the most difficult models I have had to paint.  I decided to break up the yellow a bit more and painted the shoulder and thigh pads black.

It does break up the yellow I am not sold on what I’ve done.  I tried some weathering as well (tutorial from The Brush Wizard).

I’m going try painting a Robot all black with green highlights and see if that suits the model more.  As it stands right now the Robot will not be making it into my Inner Circle list.  I’m not satisfied with the final product. For me to put it on display I have to be proud of the product and I’m not feeling ti right now.  I’ll keep trying different combinations until I get it right.  If you have any suggestions please let me know.

Thanks for reading.

  1. I like it a lot. The black and yellow work very well together. The matrix effect on the visor is a great touch. What part are you are not happy with?

    • I can’t pinpoint what I’m not happy with. The highlights on the black are think. That may be part of it. I don’t know if the yellow suits the model either. It’s bugging me because I don’t know what it is the I don’t like. I do like the matrix effect as well. That I do know.

Have a look at my first WIP post. There’s less black on the Robot. Which rendition do you prefer?

      • Gotta be honest, I like the amount of black you have, and the green highlights work well. Only my opinion though, so go with your gut feel 🙂

  2. From the thumbnails I thought it was one of the Age of Sigmar Orruk Brutes. The yellow is cool but the green I’m less struck on. Overall looks pretty sweet though.

    • I think my green on black highlights may be too thick.

  3. I like what you’ve done, however, maybe your issue is that the green highlights on the black are a complimentary color to the yellow? If the idea of the black is to create contrast then having highlights that blend into the yellow kind of defeats the intent.

I think the yellow is great, the black is great, but together it’s not standing out, and for me it’s the highlights. I still think it’s a great job, but seeing as you’re pondering it, thought I’d give my 2 cents.

    • Thanks Thor. I went to the colour wheel with these models. My first attempt was using Dark Reaper and Thunderhawk Blue. Those colours didn’t sit well with Averland Sunset so I changed it to black with green highlights instead. This combination has worked with my other Mechanicus models. For some reason and I can’t put my finger on it, there is not right. This is a new experience for me. I’ve never encountered this before when painting a model.

I agree. There is something with the highlights. I think the green highlights may be too think. I’ll have to experiment and find out.
