Cult Mechanicus- Kastelen Robot WIP

The Kastelen Robot was my test subject for paint colours.  After painting Drycha I wanted to explore working with Averland Sunset some more.  Yellow can be a challenging colour so why not give it a go.  I also enjoyed Thor’s posts at Creative Twilight on his Blood Bowl team.  Thor used Thunderhawk Blue so I figured I’d give it a shot with Averland Sunset.  So come on down….

Robot WIP 1

I really wanted to work with Averland and Sunset but this combination just wasn’t working for me.  For the highlights on the black I used Dark Reaper and Fenrisian Grey.  The steps for the blue was Dark Reaper and washed with Drakenhof Nightshade.  Then I painted over the blue with Dark Reaper being sure to not painted over the recesses.  I highlighted with Thunderhawk Blue and Fenrisian Grey.  I wasn’t too sure what to do with the helmet so I split it hoping to be swayed one way or the other.

Robot WIP 2

The steps for the yellow was based with XV-88, application of Agrax Earthshade, then Averland Sunset, a highlight of Ungor Flesh and edge highlights of Dorn Yellow.

Robot WIP 3

I don’t know how it happened but I had a revelation to use the Matrix effect on the Robot’s face screen.  I had two non-negotiables- Averland Sunset and the Matrix face screen.  I based it with Caliban Green, washed with Coelia Greenshade, followed up with Caliban Green.  For the letters I used Warpstone Green, Moot Green, Gauss Blaster Green and tiny highlights of white.  I’m pleased with the end result.

Robot WIP 4

I had a hobby painting night a few nights back with a couple of mates.  I needed some advice and pulled out the Robot.  I knew the blue wasn’t working, so what would?  Right away Mike said black with sharp green highlights like the Dark Eldar.  We also looked at the colour wheel and saw that purple was another match.  I tried both colours on a gun barrel.  The purple just wasn’t cutting the mustard but I became an instant fan with the black and green.

Robot WIP 5

The green highlights are Kabalite Green, Sybarite Green with a final edge highlight of Gauss Blaster Green.  I used white for the final highlight at the widow’s peak of the face screen.  Anything that was blue before was changed to black.  I also changed all the Dark Reaper/Fenrisian Grey highlights to green.

Robot WIP 6

I changed the small chestplate to black to break up some of the yellow.  I may paint the shoulders and/or thigh plates to black.  An alternative is painting a black strip down the chest.  I’ll decide once I have more models painted and see how the Robot blends with the army.   I’m open to suggestions as well if you have any.

Robot WIP 7

Robot WIP 8

Mechanicus need red somewhere.  I managed to squeeze mine in on the cog-wheel.

I still have to work on the base as well as paint the second Robot.  I am thinking of adding industrial scraps but haven’t been able to find those kind of bits.  If you have any suggestions or know of a vendor please let me know.

I will also be weathering this model.  My plan is to get the models painted first and when time allows apply weathering.

Thanks for reading.

  1. Nice paintwork mate. To be honest I’m not a fan of the yellow though. The black looks great.

    • Not a fan of yellow in general or what I’ve done with the yellow? Any way to improve the yellow?

      • Don’t get me wrong, your painting is phenomenal but I’m just not loving that colour on this model. I’m not saying it has to be red though. All black would be cool in my personal opinion.

      • I’ll admit the yellow is a little loud. I can easily add some more black plates to break it up. I’d love to hear your opinion on the yellow with my Kataphron Destroyer WIP. There’s a lot less yellow. That post will be tomorrow.

      • I still have another Robot to paint. I’ll do that one in all black or mostly black to compare. Thanks for the input.

  2. Lovely, like the matrix scrolling down the face plate, hate the GW bubble head, but you’ve done a nice job. Wargames Exclusive do a nice head for the Kastellan?

  3. Looking very well there. In particular liking the matrix face plate.

    • My mind was daydreaming and thankfully the faceplate and Matrix got mixed up with each other.

  4. Nice work! I like the effect on the visor.

    • Cheers. The studio models are boring with a plain metal face. This adds a bit of character to the model.

    • Thanks. Luckily I had all the right colours sitting right in front of me.
