Sylvaneh- Drycha

#MonsterMarch has come to an end.  Thank you Swordmaster for hosting and inspiring the painting challenge.  If you haven’t done so already be sure to check out Path of an Outcast and interweb hi-5 all the participants.  I pledged to paint Drycha and this has been one of my favourite models to have ever painted.  So without further ado I present Drycha.

Drycha 30

Everything came together with this model.  I was certain the honeycomb would work with the brown bark and it does.  The brown and orange-yellow work well with each.  There is a good balance of colours that complement each other well.  The photography came out good too.  Sometimes I just don’t feel it with the models but Drycha seemed to be made for the camera.  I think part of that is the dynamic sculpt to the model.  I lucked out with a perfect storm.  Thanks Drycha!

Drycha 32

So there is a big jump in fine detail compared to the WIP posts.  I can give you a run down on how I got to this final position.  I’ve explained how I painted the bark on the WIP posts.  The thing is I wasn’t quite feeling it when I had all the colours down.  I ended up wet painting some of the detail on the bark.  It worked for the Kurnoth Hunters so why not on Drycha?  I’m glad I did because I think it helped make the model pop some more.  I used Steel Legion Drab and then Rakarth Flesh (this colour rocks).  This extra step was worthwhile and I recommend it for your bigger Sylvaneth models

The exposed inner bark is most visible at the waist.  It was based with Rakarth Flesh with an application of Agrax Earthshade.  Then I used Rakarth Flesh, Karak Stone, Ushabti Bone, a mix of white and Ushabti Bone and concluded with white.  It’s a lot of highlighting but worth the time and effort.

Drycha 37

For the vine I based them with Elysian Green.  I applied Athonian Camoshade and highlighted with Elysian Green and Ogryn Camo.  Then I mixed Ushabti Bone and Ogryn Camo for the final highlight.

Drycha 36

The pink leaves were a bit easier.  I used Screamer Pink for the base and highlighted with Emperor’s Chilrden, Fulgrim Pink and again concluded with white.

Drycha 38

Drycha the spite was based with Celestra Grey then an application of Gulliman Blue.  I painted Celestra Grey again and followed that with Ulthuan Grey, Pallid Witch Flesh and concluded with white.

Drycha 39

I was contemplating painting the hair green or drybrushing it pink.  Once I was coming closer to finishing the model I decided to leave the hair brown.  It actually worked well and it wasn’t worth the risk trying something else.  When I first started painting the model the brown was dominant at the time.  Now that there is enough variety of colour to break up the brown and it actually works as the hair.

The sprites were based with Celestra Gray.  Then I painted them white, applied Gulliman Blue and drybrushed white over them.  I concluded with a wet highlight of white on the edges.

Drycha 41

Next comes the honeycomb.  New colour for me, new challenge.  It was based with XV-88 and followed with Agrax Earthshade.  I highlighted with XV-88, Averland Sunset and then mixed white with Averland Sunset for additional highlights.  I think I added white three times to the mix as I kept highlighting up.  I used white on some on the edges of the honeycomb for the final highlight.  Since I did a lot of layers of highlights the final pure white highlight blends in well.

Drycha 43

Drycha 31

That is Drycha completed.  If you collect Sylvaneth and do not have Drycha part of your collection I recommend adding her.  The model is easy to put together and a worthy painting challenge.  In fact I recommend this model to anyone who enjoys painting. There’s a richness to this model that is hard to describe.  It’s a busy model and complex and if you can figure out the blend of colours, it will suddenly spring to life before your eyes as you paint it.

This doesn’t conclude the Sylvaneth journey quite yet.  There are some more models to showcase.  I also have Alareille waiting in a box to be assembled.  She will have to wait until Inner Circle is complete though.

If you collect Age of Sigmar and want to showcase your models send me an e-mail.  My address is on the sidebar.  I’d love to showcase your models.

Thanks for reading.

    • Did you have chance to look at Hipstamatic photo app? the first photo is editing with that app. There’s a lot of flexibility with what it can do.

  3. Really beautiful. Very vibrant but still has that aggressive feel she should have. Loving the base as always too 🙂

    • Thanks. Are you planning on adding to Drycha to your Sylvaneth? The honeycomb add a challenge to making colours work but if you get the right combination I think you’ll have a blast painting her. Given your track record I don’t think you’ll have a problem finding to the right colour combo.

The base does help bring the model to life. I really lucked finding the tufts I used. I’m fortunate that they kind of just fell into my lap and that the shade of flowers compliment the models and vice versa.

      • Yes I already have Drycha waiting in the wings for some conversion work, after I complete a few more core units so I can start painting. I may be chopping her arms off for the conversion though, so I might avoid the honeycomb dilemma 🙂

  4. It looked good during your updates but the finished product is truly something special (at least in my eyes). The attention to the base also really helps make it pop.

    • Thanks. How could you tell that I was excited and proud about this model? There’s a good harmonious relationship with the base and model. The base helps draws the eyes in.

  9. Incredible work. Was really looking forward to seeing this one after all the teasing but the finished model is impeccable. From tip to toes everything is excellent. I really love the sprites and the drycha herself, the colour is really electric.

  10. Lovely work on her! I really like how everything balanced out and the honeycomb look is really nice. I agree with your decision to leave the hair brown, it looks nice but does distract from her face like pink or green would have
