I was having some modem issues so I went three days without the internet. What did I do in the meantime? Well, paint models of course. We’re well into week three of #MonsterMarch and it’s time for another update. This week it’s all about the base (thanks Rory, that song is still stuck in my head). A big thanks to Swordmaster at Path of an Outcast for setting up this painting challenge and keeping track of all the participants. For week three I wanted to show the progress of Drycha’s base.
When I first started painting Sylvaneth I was using Stirland Mud in the regular pots. Games Workshop has since released the large pots so naturally I bought Stirland Mud. I think I should have bought Stirland Battlemire instead. The new Stirland Mud doesn’t solidify with the same level of texture that I am accustomed to. I was disappointed when I saw this result, however, most of the base is going to be covered anyways so I’m not too worried.
The next step is drybrushing the base. The colours are similar to the brown bark but my drybrush strokes are substantially heavier. I start with Dark Flesh, then Sylvaneth Bark, Steel Legion Drab with Terminatus Stone for the final layer.
Now is when the magic happens. I want my grove to be full of life so I added a lot of tufts to the base. These are all from the Silflor Mininatur range that I purchased them from Hangar 18 Miniatures. These tufts are easy to work with and add a lot off character to the base. I have six different tufts represented to show the full health of the grove. Nurgle’s got nothing on these woods. The yellow can be little overbearing so I took some scissors and trimmed some of the yellow blossoms to decrease the volume so to say.
***Update March 24***- Here’s a list of the tufts I used on the base:
- Summer Buffalo Grass Tufts
- Spring Buffalo Grass Tufts
- Leafy/Weeds Tufts Summer Tufts
- Violet and White Blossom Tufts Late Summer
- Red and White Blossom Tufts Summer
- Yellow and White Blossom Tufts Spring
For the wood on the base I used actual twigs I found in the dirt. I primed and based them, added shade and drybrushed the wood with the same colours as the models. Those last two pictures also provide a sneak peek for Drycha. She’s all done but you’ll have to wait until next week though for the full reveal. This model was a treat to paint.

Thanks. I really lucked out with the blossom tufts. I was looking at videos on YouTube and stumbled across a Sylvaneth basing video. I was instantly sold on the product. I owe a lot to the tufts for bringing the colour out on the models.

This is the first time I’ve worked with tufts and it makes me wonder what took me so long. I haven’t focused on documenting the progress on the bases before. Figured I would take that opportunity with Drycha. I recommend checking the Silflor Minatur line. There’s a wide variety to choose from.

I really like the way you base your Sylvaneth, vibrant with the force of Life. I was at Hobby Town just the other day looking for turf for my Blood Bowl team as saw their selection of flowers and veggies. Not nearly as nice as what you are using, though you should add a cabbage or two in there for fun.
